内容記述 | People have painted "food" from ancient times in Europe. But why ? This is the theme of the paper. Beginning from classical antiquity, this paper examines the reasons or the purposes of painting food. However exactly food-paintings in the ancient Greece and Rome might look like "still life" which in fact began in the seventeenth century Holland, they were not "still life" or "nature morte". Instead, they were called "Xenia", which meant "hospitality" or the ancient system of mutual support when they traveled. But what is "Xenia" of paintings? You will see in the following. Then the paper takes up the Middle Ages. Christianity was the most important matter at that time, paintings that dealt with food were naturally centered around "the Last Supper", which will be examined afterwards. The main issue is whether that theme was painted with the sacred interest or the secular one. It seems that in the Eastern Church, they had zest for sacred representation whilst in the Western Church secular scenes were admired. Even though they tried to avoid secular scent, it sneaked in. |
